Fancy Dress Canes
If you're going to a fancy dress party and normally use a walking stick to get around, you might choose a costume that also involves a stick. Or perhaps you don't need a walking stick, but your favourite character has a famous staff, stick or cane. Well if the stick is for fashion or function, you can still make sure it matches your costume.
Whether you've already decided on your costume and need the perfect accompanying walking stick, or are still looking for ideas, this guide to Fancy Dress Canes could help you stay standing, while standing out.

Gandalf the Grey
Congo-Effect Chestnut Hiking Staff
Whether you're part of a fellowship or are going it alone, a Gandalf costume wouldn't be complete without his mighty staff. This staff is uneven and bumpy like the stick from The Lord of the Rings films, but made of a high quality chestnut wood that's really sturdy and durable. To paraphrase Gandalf, we are not a conjurer of cheap sticks!
Can I Make It Even More Accurate?
In the films, the top of Gandalf's staff is a topped with smaller winding twigs. To achieve this look at home, just head down to your local park and get collecting! Using some glue, stick the twigs to the top of the staff at various angles. Once set, it should have the weathered, rustic look you would expect from a wise old wizard.
What's Great About It?
✔ Combination ferrule for use on soft ground or hard surfaces
✔ High-quality strong and durable chestnut wood is practical
✔ Leather strap for added support and convenience
Gandalf the White
Bamboo Hiking Staff
After dying at the hands of the Balrog, Gandalf is reborn as Gandalf the White. With this comes white hair and robes, along with a new white staff. This lighter coloured staff is better suited for those dressing as Gandalf from The Two Towers or The Return of the King. Carrying this staff, you shall not pass without getting a compliment.
Can I Make It Even More Accurate?
This staff is already made of a light-coloured bamboo and will work for a Gandalf the White costume just as it is. But if you're the type to go the extra mile all the way to Mount Doom, you might want to paint the staff white to go with your white robes.
What's Great About It?
✔ Bamboo material is lightweight, flexible and tough
✔ Combination ferrule for use on soft ground or hard surfaces
✔ Leather wrist loop for added support and convenience
Willy Wonka (1971)
Ivory Toff Handle Beech Wood Walking Stick
In 1971, Gene Wilder showed us a world of pure imagination in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The costume was as iconic as his performance, with a red top hat, purple jacket, and flowery waist coat, capped off with a white-handled gentleman's cane.
Well if you're dressing up as the flamboyant chocolatier, Oompa Loompa doopity doo, we have the walking stick for you!
What's Great About It?
✔ Elegant ivory-style handle with a decorative collar
✔ Sleek and sturdy, black beechwood shaft
✔ Adds an extra touch of class for formal occasions
Willy Wonka (2005)
Imitation Ivory Spherical Top Walking Cane
If you're a bigger fan of Tim Burton's 2005 version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, you may opt to dress up as his more gothic Wonka. Along with darker and less extravagant clothing, he uses a black and white, spherical-top walking cane. This Imitation Ivory Stick is your golden ticket to a smashing costume!
Can I Make It Even More Accurate?
The stick from the film has a spherical handle like this, but is striped black and white, instead of just white. Well it's an easy fix, just use a black marker pen to make spirals along the top and you'll be chocolate factory-ready!
What's Great About It?
✔ Elegant ivory-style handle with a decorative collar
✔ Sleek and sturdy, black beechwood shaft
✔ Adds an extra touch of class for formal occasions
Lucius Malfoy
Chrome-Plated Capstick Handle Formal Walking Cane
He may be an evil Death Eater and sworn enemy of Harry Potter, but there's no denying Lucius Malfoy's sense of style. He's a popular fancy dress choice for all the Slytherins out there and any Lucius costume wouldn't be complete without his iconic silver and black cane. As far as the rest of the costume goes, get your best black suit or robe on and unless you're already sporting long, platinum locks, a wig is essential.
Can I Make It Even More Accurate?
This stick is already incredibly close to Malfoy's cane from the films, as the shape of the handle resembles the head of a snake. The only significant difference is that the film prop uses emeralds as eyes. To recreate this, simply glue on two green costume gems or sequins.
What's Great About It?
✔ Chrome-covered, shinny and elegant knob handle
✔ Hardwood shaft is tough and painted in an understated matte black
✔ Formal and versatile, ideal for a variety of special occasions
A Clockwork Orange
Rosewood Pistol Grip Walking Stick
Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange is a dystopian classic and Malcolm McDowell's Alex Delarge look is simple, but instantly recognisable. Requiring just a bowler hat, white shirt, a bit of eyeliner and this stick, it's quick to assemble and low-maintenance too.
This rosewood grip cane already looks exactly like the round-topped stick from the film, so there's no extra work needed! We must warn you though, unlike the cane from the film, there's no hidden knife inside!
What's Great About It?
✔ Pistol-grip handle is film-accurate and comfortable to hold
✔ Rosewood build of shaft and handle is high-quality and supportive
✔ Tough rubber ferrule is ideal for hard surfaces like pavement
Charlie Chaplin
Gents' Economy Chestnut Walking Stick
A pioneer of the Silent Era of films, Charlie Chaplin was one of the most iconic actors to ever live. When most people dress as him, they usually choose his iconic 'The Tramp' character, which you can do with a dishevelled suit, bowler hat, little moustache and a crook walking stick.
If you're looking to recreate some of Chaplin's physical comedy, this lightweight, but sturdy cane can help you look and feel the part!
What's Great About It?
✔ Crook handle is classic, easy to hold and hang up
✔ Chestnut is robust but lightweight and ideal for twirls and tricks
✔ Rubber ferrule offers fantastic grip and helps prevent slipping
Jafar
Brown Snake Hardwood Cane
Jafar! He's one of the most infamous Disney villains and is a huge reason why so many people (including me!) love Aladdin. How far you go with the costume is up to you, from the black robes and turban, to the sassy, talking parrot. But his hypnotising snake sceptre is an essential part of any Jafar costume. Just watch out for street rats!
Can I Make It Even More Accurate?
Along with an accurate costume, the snakehead of this cane would make it instantly recognisable as Jafar's staff. But if you'd like to make it a little more accurate, a can of gold spray paint from a costume shop could really make your costume wishes come true!
What's Great About It?
✔ Coiled snake is distinctive and makes for a comfortable handle
✔ Dignified hardwood shaft is durable and collared with brass
✔ Rubber ferrule offers fantastic grip and helps prevent slipping
The Great Gatsby
Brass Crutch Handle Boxwood Collectors' Walking Stick
Calling all flappers and dandies, we've got the cane for you! The ornately patterned brass handle exudes the excesses of the Roaring Twenties featured in The Great Gatsby, and will have you feeling at home at any speakeasy or prohibition party round town.
When most people picture Jay Gatsby, they think about his white suit or a tuxedo, which are both featured in the book and worn by Leonardo DiCaprio in the Baz Luhrmann film. But however your Gatsby dresses, complete the look with this beautiful walking stick.
Why Love We It...
✔ Patterned brass crutch handle is attractive and comfortable
✔ Smooth boxwood shaft is lightweight and matches handle
✔ Perfect accessory for any formal occasion, not just costume parties!
